Maestro VedernikovOdense Simfoniorkester NR 1, november, 2009
Now he is coming. Alexander Vedernikov. The great Russian chief conductor and music personality, who will lead the Odense Symphony Orchestra for the next three years.International top conductorExpectations for the collaboration with the Russian maestro are high. Both for the music director and the musicians. "It was a sensation when we managed to engage him. He is one of the greatest and best conductors, and we want to be that in the Odense Symphony Orchestra as well.
Therefore, it is natural to hire a man of his caliber to be responsible for the orchestra's artistic development," says Finn Schumacker, music director for the Odense Symphony Orchestra. Alexander Vedernikov is one of the elite of younger Russian conductors. From 2001-2009 he was chief of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. He left this job in July due to disagreements regarding the renovation and management of the opera. Almost simultaneously, it was announced that Vedernikov would take up the position as chief conductor for the Odense Symphony Orchestra.
Passion, will and positivityWith his intense being and strong ego, Alexander Vedernikov has authority and great ambitions on behalf of the Odense Symphony Orchestra. When asked to describe the orchestra with three words, they come promptly: They are passionate, willing and positive. And it is precisely that attitude which has been decisive for Alexander Vedernikov saying yes to the job in Odense. "From a chief conductor's point of view, different orchestras have different advantages and it gives different challenges. The crucial thing for me is that an orchestra has the will to become even more skilled. And they have that in the Odense Symphony Orchestra. They are deeply professional and that also applies to the management. In much more famous orchestras I have experienced that it is difficult to find the incentive for this eternal development," says Alexander Vedernikov.
"A world-famous orchestra has a very special reputation. It has a long and glorious history, but quality does not always follow, which can also go up and down here. Because you are very famous, you are not always much better"Alexander VedernikovMusical quantum leapsAs chief conductor, Vedernikov is responsible for the orchestra's artistic development. "The path of art is not like a railway line from A to B. There is not just one final destination, but many stops on the way to becoming the best. It's about being able to reach furthest on the individual distance," explains Vedernikov. One of his most important parameters is that the musicians feel free in their playing and have a very fine feeling for each other. "There is an advanced form of communication going on in an orchestra, which is extremely well organized".
Young and readyMusic and enthusiasm for all. This is the new trademark of the Odense Symphony Orchestra. And it is precisely the task of communicating the joy of listening to classical music that Alexander Vedernikov holds dear. Not least when it comes to attracting a younger concert audience. In his eyes, the decline in audience numbers in classical concert halls is not just a problem for the orchestras, but a task for society as a whole. "Children must learn to read and count and behave in other languages. But music is also a language that should to a greater extent be included in general school education. This will mean that children and young people do not encounter music unprepared," says the Russian chief conductor.
"Classical music appeals to the intellect - not to the physiology like pop and rock music does"Alexander VedernikovThe great Russian composersWhen Alexander Vedernikov wields the baton, the audience of the Odense Symphony Orchestra can look forward to experiencing works by some of the greatest Russian composers. "Everyone knows and loves Tchaikovsky. And the fifth symphony, which we are going to play on December 3rd, is one of his most known and loved works ever," says Vedernikov. In February, Igor Stravinsky's "Le Sacre du Printemps" is on the program. "Of course, I consider myself particularly competent to understand Russian music. And if I am to highlight some composers over others, it must be Sergei Rachmaninov and Sergei Prokofiev. More generally, I am interested in composers from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century," says Vedernikov, when the question falls on his personal musical taste. Pop and rock music mean absolutely nothing to him. "To me it sounds primitive and all the same. If I listen to anything other than classical, it's either jazz or folk music."
"What can't it become in Odense?"Alexander Vedernikov visits Odense after having conducted the evening before in Aarhus. A concert which received six out of six stars in Jyllands-Posten, and which was described as one of the great evenings. The reviewer wrote enthusiastically: "You almost felt Vedernikov was an orchestra magician and thought: What can't it become in Odense?". There will soon be a great opportunity to experience that. Alexander Vedernikov will conduct his first concert as chief conductor on December 3rd in the Odense Concert Hall.
