Alexander Vedernikov is Music Director and Chief Conductor of Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, and a member of the Russian National Orchestra Conductor Collegium. Educated at the Moscow Conservatory, Vedernikov quickly earned renown as a conductor equally at home in the operatic and symphonic repertoire.

From 1988-90 he was Music Director of Moscow's Stanislavsky Music Theatre, while concurrently serving as Associate Conductor of the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra (1988-95). In 1995, Vedernikov was appointed Chief Conductor of the Russian Philharmonia.

Vedernikov has guest conducted the Dresden Staatskapelle, Tokyo Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra of London, London Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony, Orchestra Nazionale della RAI Torino, Residentie Orchestra of The Hague, Royal Danish Symphony and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. He is a frequent guest in many leading opera houses including Covent Garden, La Scala, La Fenice, Opera de Bastille, Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, and Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.

Vedernikov's recent productions at the Bolshoi Theatre have included La Damnation de Faust, Adriana Lecouvreur, Khovanshchina, Turandot, Ruslan and Ludmila, The Fiery Angel, The Flying Dutchman, Falstaff. His latest work, Rosenthal's Children, premiered in March 2005, the first new opera commissioned by the Bolshoi in 30 years, created an unprecedented stir in Russian society, including a special parliamentary hearing and public manifestations on the streets of Moscow.

Last year Vedernikov appeared with Danish Radio Symphony with a concertemperformance of Le Rossigno, and at the Marta Argerich festival with Orchestra della Radio Svizzera Italiana. He conducted the full set of Tchaikovsky's Symphonies with Orchestra of Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, led a new production of Boris Godunov in the Paris National Opera (Opera de Bastille), and made his debut with Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala. In addition to the operatic productions, Vedernikov has demonstrated spectacular achievements in symphonic work.

Radical imporov ent of the quality of the Bolshoi Orchestra under Vedernikov in the last two years has allowed it to reinstate its subscription series in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory beginning with the 2005-06 season. The concert series of the current season include the participation of Waltraud Meier, Angela Denoke and other soloists of international importance. His recent work with the Russian National Orchestra has included acclaimed performances in France, Germany, Switzerland and in the United States.

Vedernikov and the RNO have commenced a series of Super Audio CD recordings on the PentaTone Classics label. Among the soloists who have performed under Vedernikov's baton are Lisa Leonskaja, Nikolai Lugansky, Mikhail Pletnev, Vadim Repin, Yuri Bashmet, Natalia Gutman, Mstislav Rostropovich, Elena Obrastzova, Sergei Leiferkus, Galina Gorchakova and Vladimir Chernov. Vedernikov has recorded orchestral and operatic works for Russian Disc, Agora, ARTS, Triton, Polygram, Universal, and PentaTone Classics.
