The whole CBSO family are saddened to hear of the death last night of the great Russian conductor Alexander Vedernikov, at the age of just 56.
Sasha made his CBSO debut in 2010, and made a total of eight visits to Birmingham over the last decade, including memorable performances of symphonies by Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev as well as a range of non-Russian music. His was a delightful presence in rehearsals, always very precise about what he wanted but also very good-natured to all his colleagues.
He was due to be with us in June this year, so we are very sorry that this concert will never be heard.
RIP.
